1914: Stanley McDonald establishes the Stanley McDonald Agency in La Crosse, WI, laying the foundation for a family-owned business.
1950s: The agency is passed down to Stanley’s son, Robert McDonald, who continues the Stanley McDonald Agency, Inc. with commitment to service and excellence.
1980s: Under the leadership of David McDonald, the agency focuses on program business, developing a successful program for the cleaning and restoration industry on a national basis. The agency name was changed to Stanley McDonald Agency of Illinois, Inc.
2012: With the sudden passing of David McDonald, the agency continued with his son James (Jim) taking leadership with a mission to continue the foundation the 3 generations before him set.
2013: Stanley McDonald Agency of Illinois, Inc. acquires Armitage, Inc dba Dave Trapp Agency, enhancing its individual and group benefits offerings.
2016: Stanley McDonald Agency continued to grow with the acquisition of Dale Harkness’s Wisconsin Insurance Center of Viroqua, Inc. further expanding the agency’s multi-line services.
2023: Stanley McDonald Agency of Illinois, Inc. is rebranded to SMA Insurance Group, Inc. to reflect the synergy of merged agencies and a continued commitment to innovation and community support, while paying homage to the Stanley McDonald Agency’s of the past using SMA in the name.
2025: Jim forms a sister agency Pathway Specialty Insurance Brokers, LLC to be a specialty wholesale agency focusing on the cleaning and restoration industry to provide his 35+ years’ experience in this specialty industry to retail agents across the country needing coverage in the excess and surplus lines market.
